Hydrophilic Pyrogenic Silica

Hydrophilic pyrogenic silica refers to pyrogenic silica nanoparticles that exhibit a strong affinity for water. Pyrogenic silica, also known as fumed silica, is a finely divided form of silicon dioxide (SiO2) produced by burning silicon tetrachloride or silicon compounds in a flame of hydrogen and oxygen. These nanoparticles have a high surface area and are highly porous.

Unlike hydrophobic fumed silica, which is surface-treated to repel water, hydrophilic pyrogenic silica retains its natural affinity for water. This means that the surface of the nanoparticles readily interacts with water molecules, leading to good dispersion and wetting properties in aqueous solutions.

Applications

Thickening and suspending agent: Hydrophilic pyrogenic silica is commonly used as a thickening agent and suspending agent in a wide range of formulations, including paints, coatings, adhesives, and cosmetics. It helps improve the viscosity, stability, and rheological properties of these products.

Matting agent: In coatings and paints, hydrophilic pyrogenic silica can be used as a matting agent to impart a matte or satin finish to surfaces. By forming a microstructured surface, it reduces light reflection and enhances the aesthetic appearance of the coated substrate.

Anti-caking agent: Hydrophilic pyrogenic silica is employed as an anti-caking agent in powdered food products, pharmaceuticals, and industrial powders to prevent clumping and ensure uniform flowability. It helps maintain the free-flowing nature of these powders during storage and handling.

Carrier and filler in pharmaceuticals: Hydrophilic pyrogenic silica is used as a carrier and filler in pharmaceutical tablets, capsules, and suspensions. It enhances the flow properties of powders, improves drug dispersion, and facilitates controlled release of active ingredients.

Defoaming agent: Hydrophilic pyrogenic silica can be added to various formulations as a defoaming agent to reduce foam formation during processing or application. It helps improve manufacturing efficiency and product quality in industries such as food processing, paints, and detergents.
